Safe driving tips for Thanksgiving

Millions of people drive over Thanksgiving weekend to meet up with friends or family. Time Magazine reports that over 47 million people hit the roads annually, and with all those people in a hurry to get to their destinations, there will undoubtedly be some accidents.

When you plan to hit the road, you need to stay safe to avoid a traffic collision. You do not want the joyous holiday to suddenly become tainted from a car accident. Here are some ways to stay safe when there is an increase in traffic on nearby New Hampshire highways.

Get your car serviced beforehand

If you plan on traveling to another state, you need to make sure your vehicle can handle the long trip. Before Thanksgiving, take your car to a mechanic to see if any underlying issues require remediation. You do not want an accident occurring as a result of faulty brakes or tires.

Remain patient

Roadways that are usually clear may become gridlocked during the holiday weekend. This is normal, and you want to remain calm and collected about it. You do not want to be in a rush, so make sure to head out well in advance.

Secure pets

When you travel with pets, secure them in a harness or crate. In the event you end up in an accident, an unsecured dog or cat could lead to severe injuries to all family members. Additionally, unsecured pets can serve as a distraction, so you do not want them walking around your car unhampered.

Do not look at your phone

When traveling somewhere, family members may call or text you to see where you are. You do not want to respond to these communications if you are the one behind the wheel. Instead, you should give your phone to someone else in the vehicle who can respond to messages as they come in. Your full attention should be on the road at all times.
